The Mermaid: A Central London Venue as Historic as It Is Unique

Unique. Out-of-the-box. Extra-ordinary. Welcome to The Mermaid London – the go-to venue for large-scale events in the City.

At the heart of The Mermaid’s five versatile events spaces is its sensational 600-seated Auditorium. The only one of its kind in the City of London, it is a breathtaking reminder of the leading venue’s fascinating history.

Starting life as a theatre – the first to be built in the City since Shakespeare himself roamed Blackfriars – stage, TV and film actor, Bernard Miles, fundraised the £60,000 needed to construct it. This included launching the ‘buy-a-brick’ campaign, which saw people from across the world pay half-crown to own a brick. Built by Sir Ove Arup, celebrated architectural engineer and the genius behind projects such as the Sydney Opera House, the Mermaid Theatre opened in 1959.

After two decades of successful productions, the theatre closed in the early 1980s as the area around Puddle Dock was redeveloped, including parts of the theatre itself. Although it reopened, it was never able to revive its former glory and, two years later, the Mermaid Theatre was sold.

Today, The Mermaid London is a thriving conference and events venue – one which, thanks to its incredible history, can offer clients a one-of-a-kind events space with extraordinary acoustics and unparalleled sightlines to its remarkable stage.
